Originally published in 1852 by Reichenbach in: Botanische Zeitung (Berlin) 10: 713.
Williams and Allen describe the species as such:
"Plants of unknown but probably large size. Leaves 10-17 cm. long and 3-4.5 cm. broad, elliptic to broadly laceolate, acute. Lip about 4 cm. long and about 2 cm. broad, cuneate or narrowly obovate in outline, 3-lobed; lateral lobes lanceolate-triangular, falcate; mid-lobe obovate-orbicular, emarginate, slightly exceeding the lateral lobes; disc with five crisped lamellae. ... very poor type specimen."
According to the W3 Tropicos database at the Missouri Botanical Garden, The type specimen is attributed to "Chiriqui", Warszewicz s.n. (not indicated). Chiriqui is a high-elevation province of western Panama, near the border with Costa Rica.
