Sobralia klotzscheana Rchb.f.
Original publication: Linnaea 22: 815. 1849.
Type speciment: Peru: Chicoplaya, Ruiz s.n. (T: W)

A terrestrial species growing to a height of about 1.5 meters. Flowers can be either pink, or white with pink lip. Found in the Coastal, Andean, and Amazonian areas of Ecuador from 500 to 2000+ meters, including the provinces of Azuay, Manabí, Napo, Pastaza, Pichincha, Tungurahua, and Zamora-Chinchipe.
According to "Inventory of the vascular plants of Maquipucuna, Ecuador," it was collected from 1450-2100 meters elevation in the Maquipucuna area.

This species recently received a Certificate of Botanical Recognition from the AOS, provisional at this time as it has not yet been published in the Awards Quarterly. Sobralia klotzscheana 'Mello Spirit' was exhibited by David Mellard and Sal Marino, of Doraville, Georgia, and was awarded at the Atlanta Judging Center, June 9, 2007.
